Project title: Get Skilled! Expansion of Non-formal Business-based Vocational Education and Training in Uganda

The Get Skilled project which is the Extension of Enterprise Based Vocational Education & training for Youth, working in a project area of three urban districts of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso. This 3-year project is funded by BMZ, supported by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and co-implemented by Uganda small scale industries Association (USSIA) and Kiyita Family Alliance for Development (KIFAD), with the aim of improving the (self-)employment and income situation of young people and women in the urban areas of Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono.

The project targets to directly benefit community members in the urban areas of Kampala (Rubaga and Kawempe), Mukono (Mukono Central Division, Goma Division and Nama Sub- County) and Wakiso (Kakiri, Nabweru, Nansana and Wakiso Town Council) in the following categories;

  • 1000 unemployed young individuals seeking skills training in the selected trades for gainful employment,
  • 200 young people from the Skill Up! Kampala project (UGA1079) in need for support in growing their startups,
  • 300 women operating small businesses in male dominated trades,
  • 125 spouses of the female target group,
  • 50 training companies of which 30 are companies that had never participated as trainers in UGA1079 and the 20 are trainers that participated in UGA1079 and
  • 56 community-based trainers to help facilitate project implementation. (15 Community-Based Life Skills trainers, 15 Community-Based Entrepreneurship trainers, 8 Community-Based VSLA field coordinators and 18 counselors of psycho-social support).

The Get Skilled project has a range of activities such as conducting a labor market scan to identify viable trades and develop relevant curricula and training manuals, building the capacity of training companies to deliver effective in-company skills training, facilitating collaboration and networking among government entities, vocational training institutions, and industries, providing vocational guidance, organizing training sessions (life skills and technical skills), and arranging internships for young participants, promoting the saving culture among the young people through introduction of Village Saving and Loans Associations (VSLAs) that each project participant is mandatorily supposed to be in. Post training support through community business clinics for those that have started businesses and also psycho-social counseling support for the project participants in need of them.
